BISIBILIBATH

A traditional Karnataka, Southern state of India. Bisibilibath is flavourful dish made with lentils, rice and veggies, spicy, a bit tangy and gooey texture. Most commonly prepared in Kannada homes, every home has a different recipe. This recipe I learnt from a dear friend from Karnataka, love this nutricious and delicious recipe for breakfast. Goodness of veggies and pure ghee and spice powder ( bisibilibath masala powder) gives unique taste and flavour to this dish.

Ingredients:

Rice – 1 cup

Tuar Dal- 3/4 cup

Ghee- 2 tbsp

Tamarind juice- 1/4 th cup

Water – 6 cups

Salt to taste

Turmeric powder – 1/4 th tsp

Vegetables: ( choice of your veggies)

Beans- 1/2 cup ( chopped)

Carrot- 1/4 th cup ( chopped)

Green peas- 1/4 cup

Drum stick- 1 cut in to pieces

Capcicum- 1 diced

Tomato- 1

Bisibilibath spice powder:

Chana dal: 1 tsp

Urad dal- 1 tsp

Pepper corn – 1 tsp

Dry coconut powder- 1/4 cup

Cinnamon stick – 1 inch

Cloves- 3

Curry leaves few

Poppy seeds- 1/2 tsp

Asafoetida pinch

Red chilles- 3

Cumin seeds- 1/4 tsp

Coriander seeds- 1 tsp

Dry roast all above ingredients adding one by one in pan. Let it cool. Grind in to a fine powder.

Seasoning:

Green chillies – 1

Cashew nuts- handful

Curry leaves few

Mustard seeds- 1/4 th tsp

Cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp

Procedure:

1. Wash and soak rice and dal. Keep aside

2. Soak tamarind and make juice out of it … grind spice powder out of roasted spices. Keep aside.

3. Chop all veggies of your choice in to desired shapes.

4. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker. Add all seasoning ingredients. Saute.

5. Add veggies. Add salt and turmeric powder. Let veggies saute for two minutes. Add soaked rice and dal. Stir well. Add ground spice powder . Mix well. Now add 6 cups water.

6. Stir well and pressure cook for 2 visitles. Switch off.

7. After 10 minutes open lid and season with Cashew and curry leaves in ghee. ( optional)

8. Serve hot with boondi or papad. Drizzle ghee to enhance the taste.
